What would you do if you met the guys from Yes Theory? Would you run up to them and say yes before you even knew what crazy idea they were working on?
For those of you who don’t know, Yes Theory is a youtube channel based around 3 guys putting themselves in uncomfortable situations with the belief that it will be a rewarding experience, more so than if they stayed at home in their comfort zone.
One of their regular ideas is leaving one of the guys in a random city for 24 hours with no money for food, or a place to stay. The idea is to go up to strangers and ask for their help in buying something for their lunch or dinner and hoping someone will invite them to stay for the night.
Most of the time this works, some generous person hears their story and helps feed them and brings them to their place to stay, furthermore they may get brought on an adventure around the city they are in.
However, what if you already knew who they were?
Would you still go up to them knowing they’ll take you out of your comfort zone?
Would you be able to give them something for food or a place to stay?
Would they stop filming for fear it’s not challenging enough to make a video out of?
What kind of position would I be in to help them?
I like to believe I would say yes to them. I’m sure my partner would need convincing but the boys would be excited to be having a “sleep over” with this new person. One would hope that bringing them back to the house would be interesting to them, to see how we live. I’m sure we would get talking about who we are, our struggles with raising two kids on minimum wage, our ideas for pursuing bigger goals (as per this newsletter) and creating a better life for our kids.
How would they react to hearing our story? Now, the guys at Yes Theory are very generous. We’ve seen them pay off college dept, help a family who tries to feed the homeless every week, give a photographer a dream trip to Italy, and so much more
Would they offer to buy me a new camera, would they pay our rent, give us something for our , would they cover the kids medical expenses, would we even be able to accept any of these kind gestures.
The biggest question that I have and the one that got me thinking about meeting these guys. Would it actually change our lives? Now don’t get me wrong all of those ideas would be a massive help to us and could give us other opportunities to improve our lives drastically. However, just like those who win a massive jackpot on the lotto would we be back to where we were within 5 years? Would I find other excuses as to why I don’t do more photos or haven’t started my own youtube channel. My worry would be that sitting at home thinking of the dream is of more interest than actually pursuing it.
Ultimately, the change in your life that you want or need is not going to come from any sort of winning lotto ticket. Of course it would certainly help get you out of a rut and give you the space and time to find/ pursue other opportunities, however, you need to make that change yourself. Whether you have a winning ticket or not you have to make the opportunities happen and try new things in the hope they will lead to something good. If you get yourself into this mindset then it won’t matter if you win the lotto. It will only speed up the process, a process you have already started and have been working on.
